A Lenten Study for Adults

Hard to Dance with the Devil on Your Back by Ray Buckley

Is a seven-session Lenten study that looks at the transcendent struggle in the lives of believers, while helping us enter the continually crumbling world surrounding Jesus and the disciples in the days preceding Easter.

Dates: Thursday, March 7, 14, 21,28, April 4,11, 18

What is Lent?

Beginning on Ash Wednesday and lasting for 40 days, Lent is a season of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter.

The Church year revolves around two “cycles,” one for Christmas and one for Easter.

The Christmas cycle begins with a season of preparation: Advent.

The Easter cycle begins with a season of preparation: Lent.

Because Lent lasts for forty days it recalls Christ’s fasting during temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).

How long is Lent, exactly?

Nowadays, most everyone agrees that Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and that it lasts for some reckoning of 40 days.

However there have been and still are disagreements on:

  • how the 40 days are counted

  • whether Sundays are counted

  • whether Lent includes all, none, or a portion of Holy Week, the week immediately before Easter Sunday.
